Gambling - Part 5

When the Next Bet Is Supposed to Save Everything

"Just one more win, and I'll get myself out of this."

Hidden within this thought may be a trap that pulls a gambler deeper and deeper into addiction. Money is running out, debts are growing, yet the hope of being saved remains tied to the very thing causing the destruction—gambling itself.

Psychologically, this is known as chasing losses.

A person becomes fixated on the belief that the next bet will recover the money they have lost. After another loss, the pressure to try again becomes even stronger.

Gradually, savings disappear, loans accumulate, and even money intended for rent, food, or debt repayments may end up being gambled away.

At the same time, financial difficulties become intertwined with psychological suffering.

Fear of being exposed, shame, and guilt can lead to insomnia, irritability, heart palpitations, or a loss of the ability to experience joy.

The person begins avoiding loved ones, neglecting their own well-being, and withdrawing into problems they can no longer hide—even from themselves.

A vicious cycle develops:

Gambling makes the problems worse, while the desperation caused by those problems strengthens the urge to gamble again.

The next betting slip may briefly represent hope, even though it simultaneously deepens the very crisis from which the gambler is desperately searching for an escape.

Under this pressure, personal and moral boundaries may also begin to shift.

Lies, manipulation, or taking someone else's money may become ways of concealing the consequences or finding the means to continue gambling.

Addiction helps explain how this happens. It does not remove responsibility for the harm caused.

This is why the downfall can unfold silently for a long time.

Behind a smile and the familiar words "I have it under control," there may already be an exhausted person, shattered trust, and an empty bank account.

But another bet cannot guarantee a solution to mounting debts or broken trust.

The belief that the next bet will somehow fix everything is precisely what keeps this destructive cycle alive.
