A Lonely Shadow on Považský Inovec

The forest of Považský Inovec stretched out before me like a torn curtain of night, its ragged edges woven from the bare branches of winter trees.

The silence was unsettling.

Only the wind disturbed it as it whistled through dry leaves and creaking trunks, as though the forest itself were whispering dark secrets.

It was the same silence that had followed me ever since I left the city.

Ever since I had lost everything—my family,

my friends,

myself.

My boots sank into the damp, frozen earth that already carried the memory of winter's first frosts.

The air was heavy with moisture, creeping deep into my bones.

It was only two weeks before Christmas, yet the spirit of the season felt as distant as the stars hidden behind the thick clouds above me.

Bitter thoughts swirled through my mind like smoke drifting from a distant fire somewhere beyond the valley.

I cursed myself for everything I had done.

The stolen money.

The friends I had deceived.

The family I had broken.

I had lied.

Manipulated.

Made promises I never intended to keep.

Gambling had become my drug.

My escape from reality.

My refuge from the ordinary life I could no longer bear.

At first, it had been a game.

Harmless.

Exciting.

But like every game that slips beyond control, mine slowly transformed into a deadly trap.

The bets grew larger.

The losses became deeper.

And eventually...

came betrayal.

The betrayal of everyone who had trusted me.

The betrayal of my own conscience.

When I stole the last of my parents' money, I convinced myself it was only temporary.

I had a plan.

I believed I would win.

I believed I would replace every cent before anyone ever found out.

Instead...

another loss came.

Another wave of despair.

Another lie.

It was no longer only about money.

It had become a matter of honor—and mine was crumbling beneath my feet like the rotting leaves covering the forest floor. I wandered along the dark forest trails that twisted through the woods like the bodies of snakes—endless...

deceptive...

leading nowhere.

The beam from the headlamp I had once bought for hiking had grown weak, barely cutting through the darkness, as though it too had lost the will to go on.

The same darkness lived inside my heart.

I no longer knew the way back.

And even if I had...

I had nowhere to return.

Home offered nothing but anger...

disappointment...

and shame.

At night, the forest obeyed its own logic.

Its own laws.

Laws I was only beginning to understand.

I could feel it surrounding me.

Watching me through invisible eyes.

Silent witnesses that neither condemned my sins nor offered me comfort.

The trees stood perfectly still, yet something moved within their shadows.

My own past.

The demons I had spent so long trying to outrun.

When I stopped in a small clearing, my breathing was heavy, even though I had been running only inside my own mind.

The wind pushed through the trees with a mournful cry, as though it feared what it saw inside me.

A night bird swept overhead.

Its call cut through my spine like a blade.

In that moment, I understood something terrifying.

There was nowhere left to hide.

No place on earth where I could escape myself.

And yet...

within that emptiness...

within that freezing cold, as my fingers grew numb and winter settled deep into my bones...

another plan began to take shape.

Again.

Like a quiet, poisonous whisper that never truly disappeared.

Find more money.

Deceive one more person who still trusts you.

And bet.

Bet everything on one last chance.

Just one more time.

Maybe... the last time. The light from my headlamp finally died.

But I kept walking.

By then, I knew my footsteps had stopped leading toward the light long ago.

My boots scraped across the frozen ground.

Every step sinking into the mud felt like another reminder of my own failures.

The images never stopped.

My parents...

their eyes filled with pain.

Friends I had abandoned.

People I had used...

and then thrown away.

Their faces drifted through my mind like restless shadows that would never stop haunting me.

And although the forest remained silent...

it somehow knew.

It knew I would not be able to stop.

It knew I was about to be consumed not only by its darkness...

but by the darkness growing inside me.

So I kept moving forward.

Through tangled branches.

Across the crackling carpet of frozen leaves.

My hands were numb from the cold...

yet inside me burned the desperate hunger for one more win—

the win that would erase everything.

Or at least silence the voice of guilt...

if only for a little while.

I walked on.

My legs felt as heavy as lead.

My heart beat for only one thing—

one more bet.

One more escape from the truth.

The forest welcomed me back into its cold, indifferent embrace.

I belonged to it.

And it belonged to me.

Together we carried a secret that disappeared among the branches beneath a dark sky...

where there were no stars.
