Europe - Our Battlefield
Europe had become my battlefield—my arena where I kept falling, only to struggle back to my feet again.
Every motorway, every endless ribbon of asphalt rolling beneath the wheels of my old van carried me farther away from everything that was suffocating me—from my problems, from the guilt that kept growing inside my chest like cancer, from the shame that clung to me like dirt I could never wash away.
I had lost everything.
My money.
The trust of those I loved.
My family.
I had traded my self-respect for cheap escapes that never solved a single thing.
In my world, only that old van remained.
My home.
My bunker.
My grave.
The days on the road were empty.
The nights were emptier still.
Silence followed me everywhere, haunting me like shadows reflected in my rear-view mirrors.
My only connection to the world was my cousin.
He was a man who understood what it meant to lose everything.
Perhaps that was why he never allowed me to fall completely.
"You knew exactly what you were doing," he told me once, his voice so cold it sent chills down my spine.
"But you can't keep running from it forever."
Every word pierced me like a knife.
I knew he was right.
He always was.
If he had turned his back on me...
If he had cut me out of his life...
...he would have had every reason to do so.
I had betrayed his trust.
I had stained the bond we had built over a lifetime.
Yet he never broke.
Every time we met at some dusty motorway rest stop or a lonely fuel station on the edge of nowhere, his gaze burned through me like an open wound.
He never needed to tell me I had failed.
I already knew.
But neither did he ever reject me.
His presence became a constant reminder that, despite everything, there was still someone who believed in me far more than I deserved.
The roads I travelled reflected the chaos inside me.
Every abandoned town...
Every border I crossed...
...felt like another chapter of the life I was trying to leave behind.
But what exactly was I running from?
My past?
Myself?
The man I had become?
My cousin gave me something I never expected anyone to offer again.
Brutal honesty.
And at the same time...
...something that always broke me inside.
The quiet promise of forgiveness.
Not through comforting words.
Through actions.
Whenever I poured out my darkest confessions to him, I wasn't searching for sympathy.
I simply wanted, just once, to feel that I wasn't completely alone.
"Everyone who stands on the edge of a cliff has to make a choice," he told me one day.
"Either they jump... or they take one step back."
I knew those words would stay with me forever.
And perhaps that was the moment I slowly began to change.
It wasn't criticism.
It wasn't harsh judgment.
It was simply the fact that he stayed.
Even though he had every reason to walk away...
...he never did.
Somewhere along those endless European motorways, between cities full of strangers and nights filled with my own demons, I began searching for something I had lost long before I ever placed my first bet.
Myself.
Every kilometre beneath the van's wheels became another piece of a puzzle I was trying to put back together.
And his voice...
...became my compass.
Not a gentle one.
Not a comforting one.
But a truthful one.
On that journey, I came to understand one thing.
Forgiveness does not fall from the sky.
Nor does it come from other people.
If anything is ever going to change...
...it has to begin in the one place I had never thought to look.
Within myself.
